Medical students from Fastbleep came into College to run an exciting half-day programme for lower sixth students. As well as lots of useful information and hints, there were four workshops involving ‘hands on’ activities which were fun to do and illustrated some of the practical aspects of medicine such as suturing, measuring blood pressure, resuscitation and anatomy. Students were given the opportunity to be mentored and helped through the application process in the months ahead. Our students were very fortunate to have experienced a high quality event run by such enthusiastic and knowledgeable medical students.
Yesterday was absolutely fantastic and many thanks to you for organising it.
The team really inspired the students and it was so refreshing to hear that not gaining a place first time in medical school didn’t mean the end of their aspirations. Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds and there are a lot whose parents would never aspire for their children to become doctors and so many do not receive the direction of those whose parents are more well informed.
We shall be running our Pre-Med enrichment course again after Christmas and would be delighted if a team could return again to do the same with another group of students as Fastbleep’s input was phenomenal.
Having attended other interview courses in the past, I can certainly say that this was the most useful. Since the course was delivered by actual medical students who have gone through the interview process, the hints and tips that we were given for the interviews felt authentic and personal rather than the generic advice given at the other courses. Everyone was very supportive and willing to answer any questions that we had about the interviews or medical school in general. I have learnt a lot from the personalised written feedback that I was given and now feel a lot more confident about the real interviews.
Just wanted to say thank you for yesterday! I realised where my areas for improvement are, so I really appreciate it! Without you, I don’t think my application or confidence would be even half of what it is, so I really am very grateful.
When the opportunity arose for Keele University Medical School to be involved with Fastbleep Foundation, we were keen to gain an understanding of how the mission statement of “discovering medicine together” is achieved. The volunteers from Manchester arm of Fastbleep Schools who ran the sessions were well organised, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. As a result, students were interested and keen to learn. It was clear from the workshop at Loreto College, that there are a number of students in secondary education that are interested in a career in medicine but may not have the necessary support and advice when applying to medical school. I believe that Fastbleep introduces students to the World of medicine, as well as offering guidance and help, which may otherwise not be offered. I look forward to becoming part of Fastbleep and hope that I can continue the success of the scheme.
Fastbleep Schools is fantastic and from my experience of the scheme I can see how much of a difference it makes to pupils who may be interested in applying to university. Although at first it seemed relevant only to students interested in a career in Medicine, I have come to realise that by working with school children from as early as year 7 Fastbleep schools encourage exploration of other career paths as well. I feel this is something unique to this programme and helps to raise awareness of the multidisciplinary team that is involved in healthcare. By volunteering with this programme I have got a lot of satisfaction from sharing my experience of the application process and I have thoroughly enjoyed answering questions as well as getting the chance to practice my teaching skills. I am very passionate about and believe strongly in the principles of this project – we should ensure that any student with potential and desire to pursue a career in medicine or any other course at university should not be disadvantaged simply to due their social and economic background.
